Belleville woman shot at family event outside ESL club

A 36-year-old Belleville woman suffered a gunshot outside of Club Illusion on East Broadway in East St. Louis early Sunday morning.

The woman, whose identity was not immediately released by police, had been attending a family party at the club when argument broke out among relatives.

The woman was treated at a local hospital and released. Details of what led to the argument were still being investigated Monday by the East St. Louis Police Department.

Police Chief Michael Floore said police were called to 526 East Broadway in reference to shots fired.

The responding officer learned that a fight broke out inside of the establishment between family members, and the suspect was later ordered to leave Club Illusion, Floore said.

"He came back and the female was shot outside of the club," Floore said.

Floore said he did not know if the woman who was shot was the intended target.

"The investigation is ongoing," he said.

East St. Louis Mayor Alvin L. Parks, Jr. said a public hearing will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in his office with the owner of the business, J.C. Blackmon.

Parks said he and the liquor commissioner board members will discuss what action to take.

"We want to know, how did it (the club) handle itself?" Parks said.
