Three members of a Swansea family have been charged with sexually abusing children.

According to Swansea Police Chief Mike Arnold, Terry L. Barton Jr. was engaged in the long-term sexual abuse of juvenile relatives. The matter came to light when he separated from his wife, Tiffany D. Barton, and she went to police.

"In the process of separating, one of the victims disclosed to (Tiffany Barton), which she brought forward," Arnold said. "During the course of the investigation, it was determined the abuse was going on for a long time."

It was also determined, police said, that Tiffany Barton's nephew, Jonathon Yon, was involved in the sexual abuse of the children. The abuse happened at the couple's home at 112 Gilbert St. in Swansea and at a previous residence in Belleville, according to police.

Terry Barton, 36, who recently lived in the 400 block of South Church Street in Belleville, was charged with six counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, two counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, two counts of indecent solicitation of a child, and one count of sexual exploitation of a child.

Tiffany Barton, 30, of 112 Gilbert St., was charged with indecent solicitation of a child.

Yon, 19, of 112 Gilbert St., was charged with predatory criminal sexual assault and aggravated criminal abuse.

The abuse dates back to at least September 2009 and happened to three female children who are now 16, 14 and 9 years old.

Arnold said Tiffany Barton did not actively participate in the sexual abuse of the children, which is why she got lesser charges than the other two suspects.

"She knew the abuse was going on," Arnold said. "But she didn't do anything to stop it."
