LEBANON — The McKendree University women's basketball team has been picked to finish in sixth place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division.
The GLVC's 2013-14 preseason poll was voted on by the league coaches and ranks the top eight teams in each of the conference's two divisions.
The Bearcats received a total of 40 votes.
Lewis University is the preseason favorite in the East Division, while Quincy University was chosen as the West Division favorite.
The Bearcats finished last season with an overall record of 8-18 and a 3-15 mark in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
Bearcats coach Melissa Ringhausen is entering her 17th season with an overall record of 305-214. She returns three starters and three lettermen, including top three scorers, junior guard Caty Ponce of Edwardsville (16.6 points per game), senior guard Brittany Willis of St. Louis (10.8 points per game) and sophomore guard Liz Gilman of St. Louis (10.7 points per game).
"We were a very young team last season," Ringhausen said. "We had a few players that played in 20 or more games last season as freshmen and gained a lot of good experience. We also have some newcomers that should make an immediate impact for us. We're excited to get out and prove that we belong in this league."
McKendree opens its season at Lincoln University on Nov. 12, in Jefferson City, Mo.
The Bearcats will host their home opener at 7 p.m. Nov. 30 against Kentucky Wesleyan College.
