Illegal dumping charges filed in Washington Park clean-up effort

News-DemocratOctober 25, 2013

St. Clair County State's Attorney Brendan Kelly has issued dozens of charges of criminal housing management and illegal dumping in Washington Park.

These charges are the first round in a cooperative effort involving Washington Park officials, the State's Attorney and Sheriff Rick Watson.

Washington Park Mayor Ann Rodgers in July approved an agreement to have county officials support village clean up efforts and code enforcement.

"The citizens of Washington Park are good people who deserve to live in a clean community," Kelly said. "Derelict and absentee property owners, especially those from outside the community, disrespect Washington Park by allowing properties to become health threats and magnets of crime."

Charges of causing or allowing illegal dumping of televisions at 1414 N. 9th St. in East Saint Louis were also recently issued against OFS Limited. The illegal dumping and criminal housing charges are Class A misdemeanors punishable by fines and up to a year in jail time.

"Clean it up and give this community a chance. That's all were asking," Watson said.
