Oh merry, merry Christmas to everyone in the Wood River area. After 13 years of ho-ho-holding $8.4 million in property taxes for a hospital that no longer exists, the helpful elves in Springfield are cobbling together a way to return the money.
Now that the obligations have been satisfied, the surplus funds from the defunct Wood River Township Hospital are expected to yield refunds of about $450 for the owner of a $100,000 house.
But wait! Is a Republican uncle or a Democratic aunt going to sign those gift checks? Do the family members really need the money, or should we donate it on their behalf to municipal roads and parks?
Gift giving is so complicated, especially when being re-gifted what you gave more than 13 Christmases ago. Good thing there are politicians in this holiday pageant to show us that it's not what you give, but what you receive.
