LEBANON — The McKendree University women's basketball team was picked to finish in sixth place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division. The GLVC's 2013-14 preseason poll was voted on by the league coaches and ranks the top eight teams in each of the conference's two divisions.
The poll was voted on by the 16 head women's basketball coaches in the GLVC, and the Bearcats received a total of 40 votes. Lewis University is the preseason favorite in the East Division, while Quincy University was chosen as the West Division favorite.
The Bearcats finished last season with an overall record of 8-18 and a 3-15 mark in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Head coach Melissa Ringhausen is entering her 17th season with an overall record of 305-214, and returns three starters and three lettermen, including top three scorers, junior guard Caty Ponce (Edwardsville, 16.6 points/game), senior guard Brittany Willis (10.8 points/game), and sophomore guard Liz Gilman (10.7 points/game).
"We were a very young team last season," said Ringhausen. "We had a few players that played in 20 or more games last season as freshmen and gained a lot of good experience. We also have some newcomers that should make an immediate impact for us. We're excited to get out and prove that we belong in this league."
McKendree opens its season Nov. 12, in Jefferson City, Mo., at Lincoln University. The Bearcats will host its home opener on Saturday, November 30 against Kentucky Wesleyan College at 7 p.m.
