A man who Alton police said pulled a BB gun on officers Tuesday afternoon remains in critical condition after being shot.

According to police reports, officers were called about 4 p.m. to the intersection of McClure and Harriett streets, where a man with a handgun was reported to be causing a disturbance.

Officers said they caught up with the man on Sidney Street where they ordered him down to the ground. The suspect ignored the orders and instead pulled what appeared to be a handgun from his waistband.

The man, whose name has not yet been revealed by police, was shot once by an officer. It was not revealed where the man was struck by the bullet.

After the suspect was disarmed police realized that what appeared to be a Glock semi-automatic handgun was actually a BB gun.

Illinois State Police are investigating the shooting.
