Final AP state football rankings include several area teams

Columbia (9-0) was third in Class 4A and Edwardsville (9-0) was fourth in Class 7A when the final regular-season Associated Press Illinois High School State Football Rankings were released Wednesday.

The Edwardsville Tigers open the playoffs at home at 7 p.m. Friday against the Andrew Thunderbolts (5-4). Belleville West (7-2), which plays host to Oswego East (6-3) at 1 p.m. Saturday in another 7A game, received votes in 7A.

East St. Louis (6-3) was sixth in Class 6A and will be on the road for its playoff opener at 1 p.m. Saturday against 10th-ranked Normal West (8-1).

Unbeaten Highland (9-0) closed out the regular season ranked eighth in Class 5A and will be at home at 2 p.m. Saturday against Carbondale (5-4).

Columbia plays host to Althoff (5-4) at 1 p.m. Saturday in a 4A first-round game.

Carlyle (8-1) climbed into a tie for 10th with Chester (8-1) and Fieldcrest (8-1) in the final Class 2A poll. Carlyle plays host to Eldorado (7-2) at 1 p.m. Saturday.
