Cardinals decline option on Westbrook

News-DemocratOctober 31, 2013

— As expected, the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday announced they have declined the $9.5 million option for 2014 on right-handed pitcher Jake Westbrook.

Westbrook will enter free agency.

The 36-year-old Westbrook was signed through 2013, with a mutual option for next season.

Westbrook went 7-8 with a 4.63 ERA in 21 games, including 19 starts, for the Cardinals this season. He is 105-103 in his career and was 36-32 with a 4.27 ERA in his three-plus seasons in St. Louis.

Westbrook was dealt to St. Louis in a three-team trade involving the Cardinals, Cleveland Indians and San Diego Padres on July 31, 2010. The Cardinals sent left fielder Ryan Ludwick to the Padres in the trade.
