LEBANON — McKendree University sophomore wide receiver Cameron James (Edwardsville) has been selected as the Great Lakes Valley Conference Special Teams Player of the Week. The honor was announced Monday morning by the GLVC office in Indianapolis.
James provided several big plays in leading the Bearcats to a 51-16 victory Saturday night at home against Quincy University. James rolled up 254 all-purpose yards in the contest and registered three plays of at least 57 yards against the Hawks. He started the big night on the first play of the game by returning the opening kickoff 78 yards to set up the Bearcats' first touchdown of the night.
Later in the first quarter, James took a snap in the Wildcat formation and raced 57 yards deep into Quincy territory. Then in the third quarter, James fielded a Quincy punt at the McKendree 36-yard line and broke two tackles on his way to a 64-yard touchdown. It marked James' second punt return for his career, with the previous one coming on a 75-yard effort in the Bearcats' 2012 season finale against Saint Joseph's College.
In addition to his big night on special teams, James led the Bearcats with 68 rushing yards and caught three passes for 34 yards.
Through eight games this season, James is averaging 17.1 yards per punt return on just eight returns. In addition, James has returned six kickoffs for an average of 39.8 yards per effort. He had a 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the Bearcats' second game of the season back on Sept. 14 at Henderson State University.
James has caught 25 passes for 240 yards with two touchdowns, which are all good for second on the McKendree squad. He is also second in rushing with 174 yards on the ground, averaging 8.7 yards per carry.
This is the first time James has been named as a GLVC Player of the Week. He is the second Bearcat to receive a weekly honor from the league, joining sophomore linebacker Alec Gerdes, who collected GLVC Defensive Player of the Week accolades back on Sept. 23.
The McKendree University football team is 3-5 overall and 2-3 in GLVC play. The Bearcats will be on the road Saturday for a conference battle at Missouri S & T in Rolla, Mo. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
