Edwardsville grad scores 24 points for WIU in college debut

Western Illinois University freshman guard Garret Covington, an Edwardsville High School graduate, had a team-high 24 points Tuesday in his team's 97-54 exhibition opener victory over Knox College.

The 6-foot-5 Covington nailed 7 of his 11 shots and was 5-of-8 from beyond the 3-point arc. He also had four rebounds, two assists and a steal.

"First of all, we made a ton of shots and I don't think that's a knock on Knox, we just had a great shooting night," WIU coach Jim Molinari said. "Knox did a really good job of exposing our weaknesses. They had great movement and for guys like Garret (Covington), Jabari (Sandifer) and Mo (Conde), they learned what it's like to chase those guys around and that's why they made 10 three-pointers. This game helped us."

Western Illinois opens the 2013-14 season on the road Saturday against Idaho. The Leathernecks were 22-9 last year, including a 13-3 mark in the Summit Conference.
