Leafs sign Smithson for remainder of season

Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - The Toronto Maple Leafs signed forward Jerred Smithson to a one-year deal on Tuesday.

The 34-year-old signed a professional tryout contract with the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League on Oct. 16 and posted one goal in seven appearances.

Smithson spent last season with Florida and Edmonton, totaling three goals and six points in 45 combined contests.

A native of British Columbia, Smithson has logged 588 games of NHL experience since 2002 and totaled 96 points (39G, 57A) for the Kings, Predators, Panthers and Oilers.

To make room on the roster, the Leafs assigned forward Trevor Smith to Toronto of the AHL.
