Students and staff at Belleville East High School are mourning the loss of a freshman student, according to school officials.

Belleville School District 201 Superintendent Jeff Dosier said Thomas Graham of Fairview Heights died Wednesday.

"Our heart goes out to the family," he said.

Extra counselors and social workers were available for students and staff at Belleville East.

Many students turned to social media to express their condolences. One student posted, "I didn't know you but you and your family are in my prayers."

The circumstances surrounding Thomas' death were not released.

Prior to Belleville East, Thomas attended Pontiac Junior High School in Fairview Heights.

Pontiac-William Holliday District 105 Superintendent Julie Brown said social workers were on hand for students and staff members.

"A lot of the kids were talking and remember him as being such a happy kid. He was always smiling and really likable," Brown said. "It has definitely impacted our kiddos here."

Funeral arrangements for Thomas are pending at Officer Funeral Home in East St. Louis.
