An Alton woman has been charged with felony retail theft after she was finally caught during her fourth trip to Wal-Mart to allegedly steal alcohol.

Barbara A. Gates, 30 of 1419 Monroe Street, was stopped by Madison County Sheriff's Department deputies Thursday evening after police said she put four bottles of liquor in her purse and then tried to leave the store without paying for them. According to sheriff's department spokesman Capt. T. Mike Dixon, she fled when confronted by a loss prevention officer and jumped into a Chevrolet sport utility vehicle.

After police captured the suspect, Dixon said she was linked to three previous liquor thefts from the store at 6660 Godfrey Road, in crimes that took place from Oct. 30 through Nov.. The alcohol stolen on the four trips to the store added up to $740.

Gates is being held in the Madison County Jail on $40,000 bail. She was eligible for a felony charge because of a 2012 conviction of retail theft.
