CASEYVILLE — A 32-year-old Caseyville man who allegedly shot a 63-year-old business owner while he was robbing her store Thursday was charged Saturday afternoon.
Phillip W. Smith was charged with six counts of aggravated robbery, one count of armed robbery and one county of attempted murder -- all are Class X felonies. He is accused of robbing Ferguson Television and Satellite, 105 N. Main St., at 11 a.m. Thursday and shooting the owner Judy Ferguson multiple times.
Smith was being held in St. Clair County Jail in lieu of $3 million bail on Saturday. He is expected to be arraigned on the charges Monday.
Ferguson is in stable condition at a St. Louis hospital, according to Police Chief Jose Alvarez.
Smith was captured at 300 Brookside Drive within an hour of the robbery after officers from the Caseyville Police Department and many of the surrounding agencies flooded the area, Alvarez said.
The police even had an airplane flying above Main Street, which is Illinois 157, while they were looking for the suspect, who was dressed in all black and had fled on foot from the store with an undetermined amount of money.
Mayor Leonard Black praised the work of the Caseyville Police Department.
"I would not only like to thank and congratulate the Caseyville Police Department for a very professional job well done," Black said, "but also all the many police agencies -- local, state and federal -- who assisted in making this arrest fast and very successful."
