Madison County Coroner Stephen P. Nonn has identified the man who was struck and killed on Interstate 270 in Glen Carbon Friday morning as Neal Luke Zimmerman.

Zimmerman, 41, of the 700 block of Springfield Road in Gillespie was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:18 a.m. Friday by Madison County Coroner's Office Investigator Shane Liley.

The preliminary cause of death is blunt force chest trauma. Zimmerman was struck by a vehicle following an accident.

According to Illinois State Police spokesman Calvin Dye, a sedan collided with a tractor-trailer, causing slight damage to the car's passenger side front fender. The car driver pulled off the interstate onto the left shoulder while the semi driver pulled off to the right shoulder.

Zimmerman, the driver of the car, apparently tried to check on the semi driver and ran across the interstate, where he was struck by a pick-up truck and was fatally injured, Dye said.

The case remains under investigation by the Illinois State Police.

A visitation for Zimmerman will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday at Kravanya Funeral Home in Gillespie. A funeral will be held immediately following the visitation.

According to his obituary, Zimmerman was employed as a forklift operator and is survived by his mother and five siblings.
