Woman fails to appear for sentencing in heroin case

— A warrant has been issued for a defendant who did not appear for her sentencing on drug charges.

Nancy Zawec, 39, had pleaded guilty to manufacturing and delivering heroin, a Class 1 felony. She had been charged with possession with intent to deliver, along with Ronald Lewis, with whom she shared an apartment. Lewis was arrested outside Humdinger's Bar in Maryville in 2011. Police said he was trying to sell heroin, and found more heroin in their apartment.

Lewis, 40, was sentenced in September to 12 years in prison. Zawec testified against him in his trial in July.

But Zawec did not appear at her sentencing Tuesday. Stephanee Smith, spokesman for the Madison County state's attorney's office, said that a warrant has been issued for her arrest without bail.
