A Collinsville man has been charged with burglary in connection with a purse snatching in the 200 block of West Main Street Sunday.

Kiefer L. Childress Jr., 21, of 112 Idlebrook is accused of stealing the purse from the Belleville mayor's wife, Rita Eckert. As Eckert left her florist shop Sunday night, a group of four men approached her and reached into her open van and stole her purse. The purse was on the passenger seat of the van. All four took off.

Police Chief Bill Clay said police arrested Childress a short time after the burglary and Eckert's credit cards were found on him. Her purse was found Monday morning in an alley in the downtown area.

Childress is being held in lieu of $30,000 bail.
