EAST ST. LOUIS — The East St. Louis Flyers season is over.
(Oak Lawn) Richards junior Romeo Johnson scored on a 1-yard run early in the second quarter and the Bulldogs' defense did the rest in a 7-6 win over East St. Louis in a Class 6A semifinal on Saturday at Clyde Jordan Stadium.
East St. Louis (9-4) proved to be its own worst enemy. The Flyers lost four fumbles, had two punts blocked and were guilty of 16 penalties as it struggled to cope with the frigid elements.
Flyers senior running back Gregory Taylor tallied on an 82-yard run and finished with 171 yards on the day to pace East St. Louis, which saw its final hope taken away on a Bulldogs' interception in the end zone on the final play of the game.
Richards (12-1) moves into the Class 6A state title game on Saturday at Huskies Stadium at Northern Illinois University in Dekalb.
The Bulldogs will take on Batavia at 1 p.m.
