Granite City catcher signs with Arkansas

Rated the 10th-best baseball recruit in Illinois by the Perfect Game scouting service, Granite City High senior catcher Chad Spanberger recently signed with the Arkansas Razorbacks.

The 6-foot-3, 210-pound senior was named a 2013 third-team preseason All-American and also earned first-team News-Democrat All-Area honors.

Spanberger was one of 15 players signed during the early signing period by Arkansas and coach Dave Van Horn. Spanberger also is receiving plenty of attention from major league teams and could be drafted in June.

"Chad is a big, strong left-handed hitting catcher, first baseman and outfielder," Van Horn said. "We're very excited about him. He had a tremendous summer and saw his stock jump. We feel like if we can get him to school he has a chance to get in the lineup very quickly."

Spanberger's older brother, Cody Spanberger, plays baseball at Southeast Missouri State.
