A suspected DUI driver hit and killed a pedestrian walking south on the shoulder of the southbound lanes of Illinois 157 in Caseyville, IL Wednesday afternoon. The pedestrian was identified by Caseyville Police Chief Jose Alvarez as a 29 year old black male who resides in Caseyville. The pedestrian was literally knocked out of his shoes - which were found on the shoulder of the highway - and thrown 151 feet from the point of impact. He landed at the edge of a clump of brush and trees. The vehicle, a 1996 Dodge van, continued about 300 feet after hitting the pedestrian, and became lodged amid another larger clump of trees and brush. When police arrived, they found the driver with injuries to his legs and ankles. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment. His injuries are non-life threatening. St. Clair County Deputy Coroner Dean Darnall pronounced the victim dead at the scene around 2:20 p.m. The Illinois State Police was assisting Caseyville police with accident reconstruction and other parts of the investigation.
