Charges against a Belleville man have been filed in connection with a fatal pedestrian crash Wednesday in Caseyville.

Shaun J. Schmierbach, 32, of the 3200 block of Frank Scott Parkway, has been charged by the St. Clair County State's Attorney with reckless homicide and aggravated driving under the influence of drugs.

Schmierbach is charged in connection with the death of Jamel Rhodes, 29, of Caseyville.

Rhodes was struck and killed by a 1996 Dodge van driven by Schmierbach about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Illinois 157 and Garden Avenue. When the Caseyville Police Department arrived, Rhodes was already dead due to extensive bodily injuries sustained when he was hit by the van. According to Caseyville Police Chief Jose Alvarez, Rhodes was hit by the van from behind and never saw the vehicle coming.

The white van was moving erratically and resulted in an Illinois State Police broadcast. Minutes later, Caseyville Police got the call about the pedestrian being hit at 1:31 p.m.

The van was heading south on Illinois 157 when it went off the highway, hit the pedestrian on the highway's shoulder and came to rest about 100 yards away in some trees and brush. The victim landed in some brush 151 feet from where he was hit.

Schmierbach was taken to a hospital for treatment due to minor injuries he sustained and was taken into police custody after he was treated and released from the hospital.

He remains in the St. Clair County Jail in lieu of a $750,000 bail.
