Think small for a change

November 29, 2013

In the era of superstores and mega web sellers, of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, it's not easy being a small retailer. Fortunately for America, thousands of independent business owners take on the challenge despite the difficulties.

People don't always grasp these businesses' value to a community -- until they think about what it would be like if they didn't exist.

Without small businesses, most traditional business districts would be shuttered and silent. Unemployment would be higher, specialty products and unique items would be more difficult to find, and the personalized shopping experience would be a distant memory.

Today is Small Business Saturday, a day to show your appreciation to small stores and to help boost their bottom line. If you haven't shopped small in a while, you'll be in for a treat. And you may find the perfect gift for that hard-to-please person on your Christmas shopping list.
