A Fairview Heights woman was charged with aggravated battery of a child after her seven-week-old baby was discovered to have a broken femur and several fractured ribs.
Relatives took the child to the Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital Nov. 24 because the baby was crying inconsolably. Hospital workers discovered the injuries and reported the case of apparent child abuse to the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services for investigation, according to Fairview Heights Police.
The baby's mother, Che B. Watson, 22 of 97 Bayberry Drive, was arrested Nov. 27 and charged with two felony counts. As of Monday she remained in the St. Clair County Jail on $500,000 bail.
According to Fairview Heights Police Department detective James Mason, the baby is in a cast but expected to make a full recovery. The child is in the care of grandparents.
