The Madison County Coroner released the identity Monday of a 71-year-old man killed in a house fire on Thanksgiving Day in rural Edwardsville.

Edwin W. Winkler Sr., of 9029 Pin Oak Township, was found dead after a fire at his home. He was pronounced dead at 5:32 a.m. Thursday, according to Coroner Steve Nonn.

An autopsy performed over the weekend indicated that Winkler suffered from smoke inhalation, but a precise cause of death will be assigned after the results of toxicological studies and the fire cause and origin investigation, Nonn said.

Funeral arrangements were pending Monday, but will be under the direction Herr Funeral Home of Collinsville.

A neighbor reported the fire just after 1 a.m. Thursday. Firefighters from Marine, Hamel, St. Jacob and Edwardsville got the blaze under control at about 5 a.m.

Although the blaze did not appear suspicious, Nonn said, it is being investigated by his office, the state fire marshal's office and the Madison County Sheriff's Department.

Winkler resided alone at the home.
