Keep charity a private matter

December 9, 2013

Fairview Heights recently voted against donating tax money to a non-profit organization, but Belleville and St. Clair townships both continue to make donations to non-profits.

For example, St. Clair Township Road Commissioner Skip Kernan donated $3,000 in tax money to a non-profit organization he liked. This was not his money but money collected in taxes designated for road maintenance. The non-profit was not providing road maintenance services.

Since Kernan did not need this $3,000 for road maintenance, he should have reduced the road taxes by $3,000. The $3,000 would then have stay in the hands of the taxpayers who could have used it to buy food, clothing or to make donations to non-profits of their choice.

Government spending is out of control. Stop donating our taxes to private organizations.
