The new Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge is set to open to traffic on Feb. 9 after four years of construction.
The four-lane bridge has been under construction since February 2010 and will carry Interstate 70 across the Mississippi River. A public event will celebrate the completion of the bridge on Feb. 8.
Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn said he was looking forward to opening the much-needed bridge. He added that the bridge's construction created thousands of jobs in Illinois and addressed the demands of the state's growing economy.
"This historic project will not only improve safety and reduce congestion but will create an entirely new corridor for economic development between two great states," Quinn said.
The $229.5 million bridge is part of the $700 million overall cost for the project.
Funding is split between federal and state government resources with Illinois funding about half the construction costs. Illinois contributed more funding to the project because most of the construction work to connect the bridge with existing roadways was within the state.
