East St. Louis man sentenced for possessing firearm as a felon

An East St. Louis man will face four years and nine months in federal prison for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon.

Stephen Benson, 42, who was previously convicted of theft in 2010, was sentenced in federal court in East St. Louis Friday. He also faces three years of supervised release, a $100 special assessment and a fine of $250.

Benson pleaded guilty to the weapon charge on Aug. 18. The charge relates to an incident that occurred on Dec. 12, 2012, in East St. Louis. That day, police responded to Benson's home in reference to an assault. When Benson was questioned, he admitted to having a Raven .25-caliber semiautomatic pistol.
