A 17-year-old Belleville East High School student was charged Tuesday with aggravated battery of a pregnant student and criminal sexual assault in connection with an attack at the high school.

The charges stated that David E. Fields, of 3536 Barton in Shiloh, attacked a 17-year-old female by grabbing her hair and the back of her neck and forcibly engaging her in sexual intercourse.

The attack occurred about 2:30 p.m. Friday. A staff member notified a school resource officer about the assault.

Fields was arrested at a Shiloh home hours after the attack was reported.

Police said that the victim knew Fields, but declined to comment further.

"The staff at Belleville East, the Belleville police and the state crime lab handled this serious, isolated allegation with sensitivity and professionalism, which enabled us to issue these charges swiftly," said St. Clair County State's Attorney Brendan Kelly.

Fields' bail is $100,000.

The assault took place in the Alternative Day School Program, which is located in a separate building from the main campus, according to Belleville District 201 Superintendent Jeff Dosier. There are 77 students in the program, Dosier said.

"In light of this isolated incident, we will be reviewing our current security measures and procedures to see if there is anything further we can do to implement additional safety measures," Dosier said in a message to Belleville East parents.

In September, Fields was charged with two counts of aggravated battery and illegal possession of ammunition after St. Clair County Sheriff's deputies responded to a report of shots fired.

The deputies arrested Fields after a struggle on the front porch of his house. Fields kicked and punched the two deputies, according to court documents.

During the fight, one of the deputies said he spotted a weapon on Fields. When Fields was taken to the ground, a loaded pistol magazine fell out onto the porch, the deputy stated.

Fields is represented on those pending charges by Belleville attorney Tom Daley, who could not be reached Tuesday for comment.

Fields was free on $75,000 bail at the time of the sexual assault.
