The Fairview Heights City Council on Tuesday approved a union contract for city employees.

The contract with the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 148, includes a 2 percent raise for all employees and an increase in the amount employees pay for health care benefits for dependents. Under the previous contract, union employees paid 20 percent of the cost of healthcare coverage for dependents. Under the new contract, they will pay 25 percent of the cost of healthcare coverage for dependents.

The contract is retroactive to May 1, 2013, when the previous contract expired, and is in effect until April 30, 2016.
