Two people attacked after responding to Craigslist ad

News-DemocratDecember 18, 2013

— Police are investigating attacks on people responding to a Craigslist ad for a television.

Collinsville Lt. Rich Wittenauer said the first victim replied to an ad on Craigslist for a TV, and met at an apartment on Brookhill Court on Sunday afternoon. But the apartment was vacant, he said.

"He thought it was hinky and tried to get out of there," Wittenauer said. "He was hit in the back with a bat, and then hit in the head, but he was still able to run off."

The first attack was reported immediately, Wittenauer said. The man was treated and released by ambulance at the scene.

But another person answered the ad on Tuesday, and also was attacked: this time by a male in a black ski mask, Wittenauer said. It is not known whether it was the first attacker, he said.

The second victim also was struck in the head. He refused medical treatment, although he was bleeding from the head, Wittenauer said. An undetermined amount of money was stolen in the second case, but police believe the first victim got away more quickly.

The apartment where the attacks are taking place is not currently leased to anyone, Wittenauer said.

As of Wednesday afternoon, there are more than 10 ads for televisions listed with Collinsville addresses on the St. Louis Craigslist site. It was not immediately known if the ad to which the victims responded has been taken down.

Anyone with information about either attack is asked to call the Collinsville Police Detective Division at 344-2131, ext. 5275.
