Don't photograph disrespect

December 19, 2013

The Belleville News-Democrat's front-page photo on Dec. 2 shows a mother allowing her girls to pass a restraining fence and to climb on an airplane installed as a war memorial.

It is not an "old plane." It is a community's war memorial. Would we feel the same if it was the Iwo Jima Memorial or any other?

If the family of every child in Granite City chose to follow this example, the damage would be significant to the memorial. Happily the folks of Granite City respect their memorial. Folks visiting from other towns should do the same, and the photographer would have done better to remind this family of the impropriety of climbing on memorials instead of picturing them.

It is time we teach respect -- and also not photograph those who show none.
