Fairview Heights apartment burglarized while resident sleeps

A Fairview Heights man reported Thursday that someone ransacked and burglarized his apartment while he was sleeping.

The man, who has not been publicly named, called police and told them he woke up in his Winchester Apartment unit to discover his wallet, cellphone and laptop computer, which he kept on the nightstand near his bed, were missing.

He checked the rest of the apartment and discovered a sliding glass door partially opened and the rest of the apartment ransacked.

Using Apple's GPS application on the victim's cellphone and computer, police were able to track the stolen items to Roosevelt Homes Apartments in Washington Park to a specific unit.

Police confronted the resident of the apartment tracked through the GPS application and found 116 other items that had been stolen from five other burlgaries in Fariview Heights and a list of burglaries reported in Swansea and Collinsville.

Several of the reported burglaries described the suspect entering the homes while the victims were sleeping. None of the victims was injured during any of these incidents.

The suspect, a male, has been taken into police custody while the Fairview Heights Police Department investigates. He has not yet been charged, but, the department intends to seek charges against the man with the St. Clair County State's Attorney's Office.
