EAST ST. LOUIS — Two East St. Louis teenagers have been charged with criminal sexual assault in connection with the rape of a 16-year-old girl at East St. Louis Senior High School.
Samuel Young, 18, of the 800 block of Pershing Street, was charged by St. Clair County State's Attorney Brendan Kelly's office with two counts of criminal sexual assault. A 16-year-old juvenile also was charged with two counts of criminal sexual assault under a juvenile petition. His name was not released because of his age.
Bail for Young was set at $100,000. He was being held in the St. Clair County jail. The juvenile was being held in the St. Clair County Juvenile Detention Center.
The victim told her mother about the rape, which she said occurred in a closet at the high school on Monday.
Police Chief Michael Floore said the police department received a call at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in regard to the rape. The call came from an East St. Louis police officer who is a school resource officer at the high school. After viewing a videotape at the school, the officer determined that a criminal investigation was warranted by the juvenile section of the East St. Louis Police Department.
Jennifer Wren, a relative of the victim, said the ordeal was mentally and emotionally stressful for her niece. She also said it was humiliating and that the family wanted justice for her niece. She said that the young girl does not want to return to the school and that the family is looking into possibly home schooling her until they can locate another school that she can attend.
Meanwhile, Beth Shepperd, assistant superintendent at East St. Louis School District 189, said district officials have launched an internal investigation to learn everything they can about the incident.
