A little jam goes a long way with savory food

News-DemocratDecember 23, 2013

You've probably got a jar of jam or jelly or preserves in the fridge or cabinet.

Bet you didn't know you could go gourmet with it.

The creative minds at Smuckers came up with a list of how to use the sweet stuff we typically put on toast and bagels in a whole new way. Here are some of the creations:

Sweet & Spicy Orange-Glazed Pecans -- Try this pairing for a tasty spicy-sweet treat. Combine orange marmalade and cayenne pepper, warming 30 seconds in the microwave. Toss with pecans and toast in a 300-degree oven 20 to 22 minutes, until browned. Once toasted, sprinkle with salt and rosemary.

Raspberry Mustard Aioli -- To make a delightful fruity aioli, whisk together red raspberry preserves, garlic, creamy mayo and Dijon mustard. Delicious with turkey sandwiches.

Spicy Peach Apricot Spread-- A little salty, a little sweet, a little spicy -- combine peach-apricot preserves, goat cheese and dried red chili. Tastes great with grilled cheese sandwiches.

Spiced Apricot Dip -- Puree cinnamon, vanilla extract and apricot preserves in a blender and serve with cream cheese on toasted bagels, raisin bread or fresh fruit. Excellent on waffles and french toast, too.

Fresh Cranberry Orange-Pecan Relish -- Combine chopped cranberries, toasted pecan pieces, diced red onion and orange marmalade in a bowl. Add a dash of red pepper flakes. Serve with a wedge of gorgonzola cheese, rustic crackers or cinnamon pita chips.

Chocolate Raspberry Cheesecake Spread -- Whip cream cheese with Red raspberry fruit spread and gently fold in mini chocolate chips. Add a dollop of this topping to pancakes, granola, oatmeal or french toast. Chill before serving for best results.
