The unbeaten Edwardsville Tigers will be trying to defend their title at the Carbondale Holiday Tournament.
Edwardsville defeated Carbondale 72-52 last season to win the tourney's Class AA championship, then won the overall title by knocking off Memphis University School 61-44.
The Madison Trojans also return this season after losing 72-60 to Arlington in the 2012 fifth-place game.
Edwardsville senior guard Shawn Roundtree was a first-team all-tournament team selection a year ago. Roundtree is the Tigers' top scorer this season, averaging 19.1 points and nine assists per game with 11 3-pointers.
Edwardsville senior and Southern Illinois University Carbondale recruit Armon Fletcher averages 18.1 points and 14.5 rebounds and senior guard Trevor Clay averages 11.6 points with a team-high 15 3-pointers.
Edwardsville (8-0) opens tourney play with a 4:30 p.m. game Thursday against East Peoria. With a win, the Tigers would face the winner between Manassas (Tenn.) and Marion.
Madison (5-1) takes on (Chicago) Collins Academy at 3 p.m. Thursday in its tourney opener. Madison's top scorers are Terrence Glover, Darrian Crawford and Deontay Starnes.
* After decades of playing in the Columbia-Freeburg Holiday Tournament, the Gibault Hawks have moved to the Duster Thomas Hoops Classic in Pinckneyville.
This is a two-day, round-robin event on Friday and Saturday and Gibault (7-0) is one of the favorites to reach the championship game.
The Hawks take on Benton at 10:30 a.m. Friday, then will play Lyon County (Ky.) at 8:30 p.m. Friday.
Wesclin (3-3) is in Pool A with Chester and Pinckneyville, while Red Bud (2-5) and Roxana (6-4) are in Pool C with Olney. Gibault is in Pool B with Benton and Lyon County.
Gibault's top scorers are seniors Wes Degener (16.6 points, 7.7 rebounds per game), Nick Row (13.3 points, 7.4 rebounds per game) and Mitch Meyer (10 ppg, 12 3-pointers).
Wesclin's top scorers are Alex Smith (15.5 ppg), Jarad Steenbergen (14.3 ppg, 14 3-pointers), Jared Timmermann (12.3 ppg) and Kyle Eversgerd (10.5 ppg).
Josh Snyder is Red Bud's top scorer at 14 points per game.
* Sparta has the No. 2 seed at the Sesser-Valier Holiday Tournament, where New Athens is the No. 6 seed. Marissa and Valmeyer also are competing in the bracket-format tournament, which begins Thursday.
