A new year, renewed hope

December 31, 2013

Last year could have been better here in Southwestern Illinois, but it could have been a lot worse. This new year might be better, but then again it might not be.

What can you do about it? Plenty. Just hoping 2014 will be better isn't really enough.

You need to do something about it.

We all know violence, corruption and fraud are bad, so it's easy to root against those things. It's also easy to hope for peace, truth and justice. But there's a lot of middle ground between obvious extremes. It's the small things that ultimately make a big difference.

Let's all make a 2014 New Year's resolution to do just a little more to control our destiny. Just a little more to make a difference with those small things. Just a little more to turn things around and push in the right direction. Or not.

You can make it a Happy New Year. Or not.
