Grab your poles: Gateway Center reels in fishing show

News-DemocratJanuary 2, 2014

The holidays are over, and the days are getting longer. It's time to start planning your next big fishing trip.

The Gateway Center in Collinsville is producing the Let's Go Fishing Show this weekend for the first time in 20 years.

"We bought the show from (former producer Steve Lengyel) earlier this year," said Jamie Lane, Gateway's director of sales and marketing.

"We've expanded it to include more vendors and more boat dealers, but we've kept the focus on fishing. That's key."

The 21st annual show will take place from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

About 120 vendors will showcase fishing products and services, including resorts as far away as Canada.

"There are over 30 seminars and other activities, and they're all free after people have already paid the cost of admission," Lane said.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources also will operate an information booth and sell hunting and fishing licenses.

This year's seminar headliners are professional bass fisherman Scott Martin, who hosts the "Scott Martin Challenge" on NBC Sports; and 2008 Bassmaster Classic Champion Alton Jones.

"Their seminars will be followed by autograph sessions," Lane said.

About 8,000 people attended last year's Let's Go Fishing Show to check out the latest in boats, trolling motors, fishing tackle, rods, reels, depth finders and other equipment and supplies.

This year, TreeHouse Wildlife Center, a shelter and rehabilitation hospital in Dow, will bring some of its live owls.

"We'll also have games and other activities for children," Lane said. "It's fun for the whole family."
