BELLEVILLE — The Lindenwood University-Belleville women's basketball team saw a big lead slip away but the Lady Lynx held on to earn a victory Wednesday over Robert Morris-Springfield.
LU-Belleville held a 25-point lead with 9:04 left in the game, but the Lady Eagles went on a 31-5 run to take a one point lead with 51 seconds left. Diamond Burtmade a layup and got fouled to give the Lady Lynx the lead for good and they went on to win 90-88.
In the first half, both teams traded baskets back and forth, and with 9:31 left in the half the score was tied at 24. The Lady Eagles took a one-point lead after a basket by Traci Osby. From there the Lady Lynx went on a 7-0 run to take a six-point lead. The run was capped off by a three-pointer fromJett Bouckaert.
The Lady Lynx extended their lead to nine after a layup byKimberly Munoz. To end the half the Lady Lynx went on a 10-4 run to extend their lead 15 and take a 56-41 advantage into the break.
At the half the Lady Lynx shot 58 percent from the field and 67 percent from behind the three-point line.Kirstie Owenled the Lady Lynx with 13 points in the first half.
Breana McCulloughknocked down a jumper on the Lady Lynx first possession of the second half to extend their lead to 17. The Lady Lynx extended their lead to 25 after a layup from McCullough with 8:37 left in the game. From there the Lady Eagles would go on a 31-5 run over the final seven minutes of play. The run was capped off by a two-point basket by Tamara Abu-Tayeh, which gave the Lady Eagles a one-point lead.
On the Lady Lynx next possession, Burt would drive into the paint, make the layup and get fouled. She missed the free throw but the Lady Lynx held a one-point lead. Cassandra Baker would come up just short on a three-point attempt for the Lady Eagles and after a free throw by McCullough helped the Lady Lynx go on to win.
Burt led the way for the Lady Lynx picking up 22 points and 12 rebounds. McCullough chipped in 22 points and grabbed six rebounds. Owen finished with 13 points and dished out three assists. Bouckaert and Munoz picked up 11 and 10 points respectively.
With the win the Lady Lynx move to 12-7 on the season, while the Lady Eagles fall to 9-6.
The Lady Lynx will host St. Mary of the Woods on Saturday in their next game. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
