LU-Belleville gets first OT victory in school history

— The Lindenwood University-Belleville women's basketball team saw a two-point lead disappear with 10 seconds left in the game, but used good defense and free throws to pull away from the Lady Oaks of Oakland City University in overtime Tuesday night.

The Lady Lynx went on to win 79-75. It was the first overtime win in the school's history.

Diamond Burt led the way with 26 points and grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds, picking up her fifth double-double of the season. Breana McCullough ended with 18 points and a career-high 17 rebounds. Shelby Kohrman chipped in 18 points and three rebounds.

The Lady Oaks jumped out to an early three-point lead after a jumper by Cheslea Jones just a minute and a half into the game. Kohrman knocked down a three pointer to tie the game and Stephanie Cathcart knocked down a jumper to give the Lady Lynx a two point lead.

Lyndi Tedder tied the game up at seven with a jumper and from there the Lady Lynx went on a 12-1 run to take an 11 point lead with 9:31 left in the first half. Burt picked up six points during the run.

The Lady Oaks cut the deficit to four after two free throws by Chelsea Jones, but the Lady Lynx came right back and extended it back to eight after a free throw by Burt and a three pointer from Kohrman. Both teams would trade baskets over the last five minutes of the first half and LU-Belleville took a 33-25 lead at the break.

The 25 points at the high marked the lowest total given up by the Lady Lynx in the first half all season. At the half, McCullough led the Lady Lynx with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Burt and Kohrman scored 11 and 10 respectively in the first twenty minutes.

To start the second half, Kirstie Owen and Burt connected on back to back three pointers to extend the Lady Lynx lead to 14. McCullough made a layup on the third possession of the half to extend the lead to 16, the largest of the game for the Lady Lynx.

The Lady Oaks came right back and went on a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to 10. Brandi Richardson capped off the run with two free throws. After two free throws by Cathcart the Lady Oaks made back to back baskets to cut the deficit to six.

The Lady Lynx extended the lead back to 10 with 8:35 left in the game after a three by Kohrman. Burt made a nice move to the basket for a layup to extend the lead to 12 with just over seven minutes left. Jones made back to back free throws for the Lady Oaks with 4:13 left in the game to take a one point lead.

Kohrman made a two free throws and a layup on the Lady Lynx next two possessions to give the Lady Lynx a three-point lead. After the Lady Oaks took the lead back Burt made a layup with 23 seconds left in the game to give the Lady Lynx a one-point lead. Burt would connect on one of two free throws with ten seconds left to extend the lead to two.

Brandi Richardson got fouled with three seconds left in regulation and made both free throws to send the game into overtime.

In overtime, the Lady Oaks jumped out an quick three-point lead, but the Lady Lynx would take the lead for good with 1:08 left in the extra session after a free throw from Burt. Owen would make one of two and Burt would connect on two free throws with three seconds left to seal the victory for the Lady Lynx.

With the win the Lady Lynx improve to 14-7 on the season. The Lady Oaks fall to 7-9.

LU-Belleville hits the road next for a game at Crowley's Ridge College on Saturday. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
