A Madison County Parolee was taken back into custody after he was allegedly found to be in possession of a handgun and cocaine.

Jerry D. Roof, 30 of 204A Maywood Drive in East Alton, was visited by a parole officer at about noon Tuesday. The officer told Madison County Sheriff's Department deputies that he found a loaded weapon during a search of Roof's apartment and called the sheriff's department for back-up. A further search allegedly turned up 7 grams of cocaine.

Roof was charged with unlawful possession of cocaine with intent to deliver and unlawful possession of weapons by a felon and was taken to the Madison County Jail on $75,000 bail.

According to Illinois Department of Corrections records, Roof was originally sent to prison in March 2011 on a sentence of 5 1/4 years for possession of child pornography. He was paroled in February.
