Althoff sophomore Brendon Gooch continued his hot weekend with 22 points and freshman Jordan Goodwin added 17 Saturday as the Crusaders won their fourth game in a row with a 59-50 victory over Gibault.
Althoff (12-4) was 11th in the latest Class 3A state rankings while Gibault (13-3) was sixth in Class 1A.
Gooch had 21 points and 12 rebounds the night before in Althoff's South Seven Conference victory over Marion and remained extremely active against Gibault.
"He just shoots it so well and if someone else shoots it, he goes in there with those gadget arms and gets rebounds," Althoff coach Greg Leib said. "It's all on his effort and he does a great job of anticipating those rebounds, too."
Althoff led Gibault 15-8 after the first quarter, but the Hawks responded with a hot second quarter and led 25-23 at halftime thanks to a late 3-pointer by senior Nick Row.
The Crusaders led 40-35 after three quarters and then pulled away down the stretch thanks to a 7-0 run.
Row led Gibault with 21 points while Wes Degener had 10 and Mitch Meyer finished with eight.
"They were keying on Goodwin and Gooch, making sure those guys didn't get free," Leib said. "We were able to find some other people when we needed to. We didn't shoot it real well, but that's to be expected when you play a tough game like tonight."
Leib said controlling the high-scoring Degener was a focus going into the game.
"We tried to use our length, tried to pay attention to him and keep him in front of us," Leib said. "I really like the approach the guys took to the game tonight and how much they helped each other on defense."
