SWC has three teams ranked in Class 4A poll

The Southwestern Conference has three of the top 10 spots in this week's Associated Press Class 4A boys state basketball rankings released Wednesday.

Alton (17-2) moved up to seventh, Edwardsville (13-1) is eighth and East St. Louis (12-4) checked in at No. 10. Alton handed Edwardsville its first loss last Friday before winning the Washington Tournament, while East St. Louis defeated Alton last week.

Althoff (12-4) was 13th in the Class 3A rankings, while Mater Dei (12-6) cracked the Class 2A state rankings for the first time this season at No. 10.

Central (12-4) and Nashville (13-6) also received votes in 2A. Central beat Nashville 61-40 Tuesday at the Nashville Invitational Tournament.

In Class 1A, Madison (9-4) was fifth and Gibault (14-3) was sixth, with Okawville also receiving votes.

* In the new girls basketball state rankings, Edwardsville (16-0) was fourth in Class 4A while Central (21-0) was second in 2A, followed by No. 3 Nashville (18-2).

Mater Dei (14-6) received votes in the new 3A state rankings.
