Flinging drugs away: Wanted Granite City man arrested outside motel

A Granite City man has been charged with possession of a controlled substance after a sheriff's deputy said the suspect flung pill bottles containing drugs from his pockets.

According to Madison County Sheriff's Department reports, Raymond L. Nihells, 54 of 3241 W. Chain of Rocks Rd., was acting suspiciously Tuesday as he stood along Illinois 3 in Granite City. When a deputy approached Nihells, the suspect headed toward the Sun Motel where he tried to enter one of the rooms.

Nihells reached into his pocket when confronted, according to the sheriff's department's report. The deputy shouted for Nihells to show his hands and said that Nihells initially refused before pulling them out and flinging pill bottles away.

The bottles were recovered and allegedly contained marijuana and half of an adderall tablet for which the subject did not have a prescription. The deputy reported that Nihells was also found to have a marijuana cigarette.

A records search indicated Nihells was wanted for possession of cannabis with intent to distribute and domestic battery.

Nihells was charged with a felony count of possession of a controlled substance. He was also charged with misdemeanor counts of unlawful possession of cannabis, resisting a police officer and obstructing a police officer. His bail was set at $30,000.
