Driver flees scene after ramming into Fairview Heights school bus

News-DemocratJanuary 24, 2014

A First Student school bus was hit Friday morning just after dropping 60 students at Illini Elementry in Fairview Heights.

The bus was hit by a car that was extensively damaged when it veered from its lane and hit the southbound bus on Sullivan Drive, south of Longacre Drive and near Luja Nursery. The driver of the car was seen out of the vehicle immediately after the crash, but then disappeared. Police at the scene could not comment.

The bus driver used the emergency exit because the impact shoved the bus against a guard rail. The bus body did not appear to be significantly damaged, but the bus drive shaft was broken. The bus driver, who was not immediately identified, said he was not hurt but was shocked the other driver survived.

Sullivan Drive was closed between Longacre and Frank Scott Parkway while the scene was being cleared.
