A delivery truck crossing railroad tracks in Freeburg was hit by a train Friday afternoon, killing the driver, authorities said.

Donald D. Stahl, 33, of Smithton, was pronounced dead at the scene, St. Clair County Chief Deputy Coroner Dan Haskenhoff said.

Stahl was was driving about 12:45 p.m. Friday on Lanter Lane, just off Illinois 15 near the Dairy Queen in Freeburg, when his truck was struck at a train crossing.

The delivery truck was pushed over onto its side by the impact. Haskenhoff said Stahl worked for a local lumber company.

The Canadian Northern train was headed south and the truck was headed east after making a delivery. Haskenhoff said the train sounded its horn before impact.

Emergency workers tried to revive Stahl before he was taken away in an ambulance.

There are no crossing controls at the intersection. There are only two houses at the end of the lane.
