The Illinois State Police are investigating a Saturday evening single-vehicle accident that left one person dead and another in the hospital.

According to trooper Calvin Dye Jr., at about 8:30 p.m. a 2011 Chevrolet HHR struck the guard rail on the right side of eastbound Interstate 64 in East St. Louis.

The car skipped out into traffic on the three-lane section of the interstate, missing other vehicles before slamming back into the guard rail. It slid 161 feet along the guard rail before coming to a stop, according to the investigation.

Police said the passenger in the car was killed while the driver was transported to the hospital. No update on the driver's condition was available Monday.

Police have not yet released the identity of the driver or the passenger while the case is under investigation.

Neither occupant of the vehicle is believed to have been wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
