Black Widows '97 claim title at Snowball Classic

The Black Widows '97 fast-pitch team from Edwardsvile won the 16-and-under NSA Snowball Classic at the Avanti Dome in Pekin on Jan. 10-12.

It marked the third consecutive season the Black Widows have won the tourament.

On their way to the championship, the Black Widows posted wins over the BNGSA Pride (12-0), Bolingbrook Fury (8-0), Rock River Sluggers (Iowa) 7-2, Quad City Xplosion (7-4) and BNGSA Angels '98 (1-0) in the title game.

With the championship, the Widows qualify for the NSA 'A' World Series this summer in South Carolina.

Top hitters for the Black Widows were, Sara Radae .583, Sidney Bost .556, Megan Radae .538, Sydney Schwegel .500, Mallory Rutz .333, Lauren Daughtery .333, and Alex Holten .300.

The Black Widows pitching was stellar as their two pitchers -- Sidney Bost and Melissa Meracle --both fired a no-hitter.

Meracle finished with a 0.95 ERA and Bost had an ERA of 1.67 for the tournament.

The Black Widows, with a record of 19-3-1, andcoached by Greg Exton, Todd Kruse, and Alex Radae played in a tournament in DuQuoin last weekend.
