Moving? Bet it's not too far from home

If a metro-east family moved out of their home county, the U.S. Census Bureau has found they likely headed to a neighboring county.

The Census Bureau released Thursday the results of a survey of migration patterns of residents between counties and states within the past year.

The data does not break out Scott Air Force Base personnel who are more prone to moving than civilians.

Here's what researchers found:

St. Clair County

Residents moved out: 14,027

Top 3 destinations

* 2,184 residents moved to Madison County

* 1,639 residents moved to St. Louis City or St. Louis County

* 696 residents moved to Monroe County

Residents who moved in: 13,082

Top 3 previous home counties

* 1,829 residents moved from Madison County

* 1,199 residents moved from St. Louis City or St. Louis County

* 493 residents moved from Clinton County

Residents with a bachelor's degree or above

* 986 such residents moved out of the county

* 684 such residents moved into the county

Madison County

Residents who moved out: 13,382

Top 3 destinations

* 1,970 residents moved to St. Louis City or St. Louis County

* 1,829 residents moved to St. Clair County

* 504 residents moved to Macoupin County

Residents who moved in: 12,475

Top 3 previous home counties

* 2,184 residents moved from St. Clair County

* 1,094 residents moved from St. Louis County

* 548 residents moved from Macoupin County

Residents with a bachelor's degree or above

* 1,288 such residents moved out of the county

* 855 such residents moved into the county

Monroe County

Residents who moved out: 1,906

Top 3 destinations

* 436 residents moved to St. Louis City or St. Louis County

* 350 residents moved to St. Clair County

* 141 moved to Cook County

Residents who moved in: 1,615

Top 3 previous home counties

* 696 residents moved from St. Clair County

* 268 residents moved from St. Louis City or St. Louis County

* 168 residents moved from Cook County

* 95 such residents moved out of the county

* 170 such residents moved into the county.
