From lofty ideals to a moron

February 6, 2014

H.L. Mencken, by no stretch of the imagination a conservative, wrote an article in the Baltimore Sun on July 26, 1920. To wit:

"As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents more and more closely the inner soul of the people, and we move toward a lofty ideal. On some great and glorious day, the plain folks of the land will reach their hearts' desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron." (I would change it to narcissistic moron). So it was written, and so it has come to pass.

Is letter writer Frankie Seaberry listening?
